Web Hosting Wire – TACOMA, Wash. – A new phishing survey released by the Anti-Phishing Work Group (APWG) reveals that the longevity of phishing Web sites dropped by 25 percent over the last year.
Uptimes are a vital measure of how damaging phishing attacks are — the longer a phishing attack remains active, the more victims there can be. The decrease indicates collective progress is being made by the parties that fight phishing, and may be attributable to improved policies and operations at Internet infrastructure providers, brandholders, domain name registrars and registries, and private Internet security providers.

Web Hosting Wire – Foster City, CA and Tampa, FL – Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), a provider of global data center services, and Switch & Data Facilities Company, Inc. (Nasdaq: SDXC), a leading provider of data center and Internet exchange services, have entered a definitive agreement for Equinix to acquire Switch and Data in a transaction valued at approximately $689 million in cash and stock, based on yesterday’s market close. The combination of the two companies will further strengthen Equinix’s leadership position in the global data center services market by extending the company’s presence to 16 new markets across North America. Equinix will integrate Switch and Data’s data center business and operations, including the company’s 34 data centers in 22 markets in the U.S. and Canada. The acquisition will add more than one million gross square feet of data center capacity, bringing Equinix’s total global footprint to 79 data centers in 34 markets and more than six million square feet across the North American, European and Asia-Pacific markets. It will allow Equinix to immediately expand into new strategic markets, including Atlanta, Denver, Miami, Seattle and Toronto, as well as provide a platform for future expansion of Switch and Data assets.
The acquisition will help the companies’ customers respond to two broad market trends. The rapid growth of demand for online information is requiring companies to store and distribute larger volumes of latency sensitive assets and applications at the network edge, near local population centers. At the same time, the market compels companies to develop global aggregation and distribution strategies for their digital assets and applications. The transaction is expected to give Equinix customers broader access to local markets for their network edge deployments, and Switch and Data customers a comprehensive solution to their global data center needs. The customers of both companies will benefit from a stronger product portfolio and capacity pipeline in a market where demand continues to outpace supply, and from doing business with a partner that brings together the capabilities of two companies with strong reputations for operational excellence and high customer satisfaction.

Web Hosting Wire – HONOLULU - Superb Internet, one of the oldest and most prominent members of the web hosting community, announced today the extension of its existing industry-leading lease-to-own program to all of its dedicated servers; a move that is sure to shake up the industry. The existing (so provided since 1996) lease-to-own program, until now only offered on the Superb Enterprise high-end/custom dedicated line of servers, allows – as of today, all — dedicated server customers to pay a small lease to own fee for a year and then at the end of one year they own the hardware outright while the monthly fee is reduced to a minimal colocation fee, saving the customers thousands of dollars over the life-time of the server.
“We understand that in tough economic times customers are looking for more and more value, and we believe this is one of the best deals out there,” states William Song, Senior Product Manager. “This represents a paradigm shift in the relationship between customer and web host, offering much more transparency in the billing practices. At other web hosts customers are typically forced to pay outrageous ongoing monthly fees for hardware that is often 3-4 years old. With the Superb lease-to-own program customers always know that they have paid off their hardware after year 1, and the low ongoing fees simply represent, space, power, AC, support, and bandwidth among other costs. If customers wish to upgrade their server they can do so at wholesale rates, and if they decide to leave they can have the server shipped to them, because they own it! Compare that to most companies where customers end up paying thousands of dollars more (many times the cost of the server hardware) and end up with nothing when they cancel.”
This program is particularly well-suited to large partners and resellers who often have hundreds (or thousands) of servers representing huge ongoing monthly costs. Resellers can own all their servers after one year of service, significantly reducing their costs, which they can use to grow their businesses.
