“Trustwave is excited to launch this partnership with OpenSRS,” said Brian Trzupek, Trustwave Vice President of Managed Identity and SSL. “OpenSRS has an amazing presence in online services and we believe that the strength and affordability of our SSL offerings will open up new channels for OpenSRS resellers to offer highly trusted products from a leading brand in online security.”

Website Hosting News – Boston, MA – GlobalSign, one of the longest established Certification Authorities (CA), and specialists in SSL security, today announced that it has shown the largest actual increase in the number of SSL Certificates active for the month of February. Enjoying a monthly growth of almost 2000 new secure sites, GlobalSign’s highly trusted SSL technology is being adopted at a faster rate than the other leading SSL Providers Symantec (comprising of its four SSL brands – VeriSign, GeoTrust, thawte and RapidSSL), as well as GoDaddy and Comodo, who all showed a decrease in number of secured sites for the same period.

Between 2008 and 2009 the number of sites secured by GlobalSign more than doubled and subsequent years have seen strong growth rates of 64% and 59% respectively – higher than other major players. These statistics clearly indicate that rising numbers of website owners are realizing the importance of using SSL technology, and that more existing certificate users are deciding to switch from their current vendor to take advantage of GlobalSign’s trusted brand, future-proof SSL security and advanced security features.
“February was an unusually interesting month for SSL in the media – with actor and high profile tweeter Ashton Kutcher’s Twitter account being hacked, most likely with a Firesheep type traffic sniffer. The hacker left a stark message that Mr. Kutcher should be using the SSL secured versions of such social media sites. With SSL in the headlines, GlobalSign is delighted to see such growth in the deployments of our SSL technology which will mitigate the problem of such traffic sniffers,” said Steve Waite, Chief Marketing Officer, GlobalSign. “Not only are the number of GlobalSign SSL Certificates implemented on websites increasing, but we are now clearly being considered as a trusted and alternative security provider to the likes of VeriSign [now Symantec].”

In coming months GlobalSign’s position in the SSL market is expected to continue to accelerate, as a result of both recent and upcoming expansions into new markets, providing local language websites and support for a number of countries, together with the launch of new product features and enhancements, such as malware monitoring services and fully automated SSL provisioning. As GlobalSign continues to develop its products and services to fully serve the needs of its retail, enterprise and channel customers, these exciting developments only help strengthen the GlobalSign brand and its position in the global SSL Market.

A DNS is like a phonebook for a computer. When a person wants to look up a phone number, he or she looks in the phone directory for the other party’s name, which corresponds with a number that a telephone can connect to. A DNS works the same way; when a person types a website address such as www.comodo.com, into a browser’s search bar, the computer contacts a Domain Name Server. The DNS identifies the IP address that corresponds to the domain name, like a telephone user looking up a telephone number in the directory. The DNS server then replies to the user’s browser, informing it of the IP address, and the browser duly connects.

For most Internet users, the DNS server they use is furnished by their Internet Service Provider. This process of matching human-readable domain names to machine-understandable IP addresses is part of the fabric of the Internet. It happens millions of times per day.

Rarely, the DNS database can be corrupted with incorrect IP addresses, the way a telephone directory might be printed with incorrect telephone numbers. If that happens, the Internet user may be directed to a spoof website. That site may be designed to look exactly like the site the Internet user intended to visit, and the visitor may be tricked into sharing confidential information there.

Comodo’s Domain Name Service offers three safeguards against Domain Name Server data corruption.

The first advantage Comodo’s secure DNS has over that of the Internet service providers lies in user security. By using a secure DNS, users will be assured that their attempts to connect to websites they trust will not be redirected to malware or phishing sites. The second advantage lies in speed. The nodes that Comodo uses for its DNS services are placed strategically around the world to ensure that a users’ requests are resolved as rapidly as possible.

The third advantage of Comodo’s secure DNS is in ease of use. Using Comodo’s secure DNS does not require users to download any software, meaning that the only technical thing that a user has to do to set the product up is to open Internet settings in control panel and type new IP addresses in the primary DNS server boxes. Because no software is necessary, Comodo DNS also works with non-computer devices, such as wireless-enabled mp3 players and videogame consoles. To learn more, visit www.comodo.com/secure-dns.

Note for beginners: DNS stands for Domain Name System. It is the part of the Internet infrastructure that translates a familiar domain name, such as ‘example.com’ to an IP address like 123.456.789.04. This is essential because the Internet routes messages to their destinations on the basis of this destination IP address, not to the domain name. Whenever you type a domain name, your Internet browser contacts a DNS server and makes a ‘DNS Query’. In simplistic terms, this query is ‘What is the IP address of example.com?’. Once the IP address has been located, the DNS server replies to your computer, telling it to connect to the IP in question.

This innovation is available with the newest release of its product HackerGuardian™.

Merchants who accept payment cards such as credit cards are required to scan their networks at certain periods, checking for breaches in security. Previously, internal network scans required dedicated hardware, run by an onsite employee.

With HackerGuardian, businesses can now run remote scans of their internal and external networks using the same software. A lightweight bootable agent installed on one of the local network nodes can be activated by an employee who may be located in another state, or even on another continent.

Merchants required to meet level 1, 2, or 3 of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS) can now centralize the administration of their vulnerability scans. They can use one software tool to manage scans of both their internal and external networks.

Internal Scanning

HackerGuardian’s Internal Scanning feature allows PCI DSS-compliant merchants to run vulnerability scans on computers located on a local area network. These computers are typically ‘inside’ the company’s private network and are protected by a perimeter firewall or other network security device. In order to run an internal scan, the administrator must first run the HackerGuardian internal scanning agent on the local network.

Once installed and configured, this Agent will establish a secure connection to a HackerGuardian Access server which will in turn establish a secure communication channel (connection) to a HackerGuardian scanning server. The scanning server will then be able to connect to and run scans on the local computers located at the IP addresses that have been specified in the ‘LAN Devices’ area of the HackerGuardian interface. The Agent software is available as an ISO image (to create a Live CD) or as files (to create a Live USB stick). The scans can be run directly by booting the device through either the Live CD or the Live USB stick.

There are two main prerequisites to running an internal scan:

* The creation of a ‘Local Device’ as a target for the scans in the ‘LAN Devices’ area of the HackerGuardian interface. Local Devices are defined by one or more IP addresses.
* The internal scanning Agent has been installed on the local network to communicate with the HackerGuardian scanning servers via VPN connection.

“Comodo is proud to lead the vulnerability scanning industry with Hackerguardian Internal Scanning,” said Melih Abdulhayoglu, Comodo’s CEO. “We are committed to creating trust online and making it easier to communicate and transact over the Internet. With HackerGuardian Internal Scanning, merchants can concentrate on building their relationships with customers, instead of on fulfilling their regulatory requirements.”

“Be it an eCommerce site interacting with a payments processor, or with a new mashup technology, Internet applications continue their relentless march. Consumers get their functionality from multiple interacting web services now,” said James Langman, VP of Business Development at Comodo Group Inc. “In this new environment it is critical for web applications interacting through a user’s browser to be able to establish a secure, mutually-authenticated channel, even in the presence of a potentially malicious user. SafeMashups’ innovative MashSSL repurposes the tried and tested SSL infrastructure to solve this issue.”

The MashSSL specification and software are available as free downloads at safemashups.com. The technology was named a finalist at the 2009 RSA Conference Innovation Sandbox. NetworkWorld recently named SafeMashups one of the Top Ten Companies to watch out for in the next year.

“We are pleased that an industry leader like Comodo would choose to partner with us in making MashSSL ubiquitous”, said Ravi Ganesan, Founder and CEO of SafeMashups. “MashSSL has the potential to fill a significant hole in the fabric of the Internet with a secure and standard protocol. MashSSL will also drive the adoption of SSL certificates, including EV-SSL certificates in a significant fashion”.

Both companies reiterated their commitment to work with other partners to rapidly make the standard completely open.

Comodo Secure Email Pro offers a way to protect the contents of an email from alteration in transit.

Email’s ease and utility, which allows internal users, partners and customers to communicate effectively, also puts confidential information in reach of those who want to profit from it. To a moderately skilled person, inside the organization or out, unsecured email is easy to read, impersonate and alter, and is not much different from a postcard written in pencil.

Digital signatures on email documents represent a one-way hash (encryption) of the message content that uses the sender’s public and private key pair. This process creates a “signature” that only the sender’s public key can decrypt. The recipient, using the sender’s public key, can then validate the sender as well as the integrity of message contents. The sender’s digital signature will be un-trusted by the recipient’s email program if either the message content or sender’s digital certificate are invalid.

The Secure Email Pro signing procedure automates the digital signature process, and attaches the “signature” to the out-going document to be emailed. CSE Pro also checks and validates incoming signed documents using the reverse process.

Because the computer tenaciously pairs the digital signature to one saved version of the document, it is nearly impossible to repudiate a digitally signed document.

Comodo Secure Email Pro is an install-and-forget software application that can automatically digitally sign all outgoing messages without the need to pre-exchange passwords or public certificates. For further protection, email documents can also be encrypted, making them unintelligible to anyone but the intended recipient.

About Comodo
Comodo CA, Ltd., is the world’s second-largest issuer of high-assurance digital certificates, providing online communications unreadable to anyone but the sender and the recipient.

IT managers can better control requests to see or modify business data, announced Comodo today. By adding another form of identification besides passwords to user logins, IT departments can manage who accesses corporate information over the Internet and in cloud-based applications.

To help secure small companies and promote security best-practices, Comodo has released a free version of its Two-factor Authentication for Microsoft SharePoint and Outlook Web Access.

“If you want to make SharePoint and Outlook Web Access available via the Internet — you have to secure it, and two-factor authentication is the best way to do it,” said Comodo’s CEO, Melih Abdulhayoglu. “When you are accessing Sharepoint or Outlook Web Access from inside the office, you are using the physical security of being on your local network. Yet, once you want to access the services from outside of your company’s local network, security becomes an issue. To ensure security, you must either use a VPN connection, which may be costly and hard to manage, or securely authenticate the user. Leaving it unsecure can result in the information being publicly accessible.”

“Two-Factor creates another layer of security for the cases when Sharepoint or Outlook Web Access is accessible from a public Internet connection by requiring multi-factor authentication. You can control access more securely if you add another factor like a secure cookie or client certificate on top of the password.”

Two-factor authentication seamlessly “double-checks” the identity of users logging on to SharePoint and Outlook Web Access. Two factor solutions are the industry standard for verifying online financial users: they protect assets by requiring another form of identification besides the user’s password.

In addition to passwords, Comodo’s free version of its Two-Factor Authentication solution can be configured to use cookies, security questions, or one-time passwords using an alternate communication such as email or SMS. The enterprise version offers customers the option of replacing cookies with client certificates. Both the free and the enterprise versions rely on information stored on the user’s computers. After installation, there is no change to the user’s login procedure, making Comodo Two-Factor Authentication easy to deploy and manage.

Comodo Two-Factor Authentication for Microsoft SharePoint and Outlook Web Access is a wizard-driven solution, easily installed on any network without client- or application-side development.

The free download is available for Windows, Linux or Solaris OS. Free users are limited to 25 users, allowing IT professionals to evaluate Comodo’s enterprise-grade Two-Factor Authentication without commitment or risk.

To download the free version, visit http://enterprise.comodo.com/security-solutions/authentication-identity-assurance/two-factor and click on “Get Two Factor Authentication for Microsoft Sharepoint and OWA.”
