After successful testing, GNAX will utilize Internap for a 10GB IP connection to increase performance and redundancy within its Gold Network. GNAX will use an existing dark fiber route purchased from AGL Networks of Atlanta and will work with the engineering team to engineer a solution that traverses a different path than GNAX’s current fiber to its providers . “This path completely avoids Telx at 56 Marietta Street, which is the current termination point of the GNAX metro Ethernet networks,” Hinkle said. “The new fiber terminates at Internap’s 250 Williams Street facility and provides both increased redundancy and capacity. Many have a ring or multiple paths – but like we were constructed in the past – they all come back to one single-point-of-failure facility.”

The new connection will enhance the performance of the GNAX Gold network. Internap utilizes performance-based routing which selects the best routes from their backbone providers, which differ from the current providers on the GNAX Gold network. GNAX will use its own route optimization to select the best path of its current as well as the best paths of the Internap optimized routes. Hinkle adds: “when assessing the network performance during our testing, it really became apparent that this was a decision we needed to make. The performance was vastly superior to anything we had tested in the past in a single provider and it made it very simple for us to move forward.” Hinkle believes The GNAX gold network will be unsurpassed for performance on the Atlanta market.

The completion of the project is estimated to be 10/1/09.

The N+1 rated facility, which now offers an additional 8500 square feet of data center space, was outfitted with the industry’s newest energy-efficient systems. The overall size of the raised floor space in this facility now measures 33,500 square feet.

“The implementation of green initiatives in this high-demand NYC locale has provided our Manhattan customers with a data center that is 15 – 20 percent more energy efficient than one using conventional technologies,” said Internap General Manager and VP of Data Center Operations Mike Higgins. “By improving operating efficiencies within the data center infrastructure, Internap has increased the amount of power available for customer IT loads. In today’s environment, providing customers a higher density power solution is a key differentiator in the marketplace.”

The Manhattan facility has been fitted with an ultrasonic humidification system, which uses less energy than traditional methods for balancing humidity. Energy-efficient electronically commutated (EC) fans and variable frequency drives (VFDs) within the air conditioning systems were also installed. EC fans provide an immediate energy savings of up to 30 percent over units using conventional technology, while VFDs adjust motor speed to better match output requirements, resulting in further energy savings. An Energy Management System (EMS) was also integrated to monitor and control all critical infrastructure in the data center. This system balances AC units, space temperatures, humidity and other controls to ensure systems work in unison.

As a result of undertaking these green initiatives, Internap anticipates rebate checks from the New York State Energy Research and Development Organization (NYSERDA) in recognition of the energy-efficient enhancements.

“More and more companies are seeking ways to operate in a green environment. Both state and federal governments continue to increase the number of rebates for green initiatives in the data center. We plan to take advantage of those opportunities now and in the future,” Higgins said.

As part of this effort, Internap will reduce its workforce by approximately 10 percent (approximately 45 employees). These reductions are primarily in back-office staff functions and include the elimination of certain senior management positions. When completed, this program will generate approximately $5 million in annualized operating expense savings. Internap expects to incur costs associated with this restructuring of approximately $1.2 million, the majority of which will be recorded in the first quarter of 2009.

In addition to announcing the cost reduction plan, Internap also provided revenue and EBITDA estimates for first quarter 2009. Revenue for the quarter is expected to be in the range of $62 to $65 million and adjusted EBITDA is expected to total between $4 and $5 million.
